The vehicle landscape in Australia has seen a significant shift in buying habits over the last 12 months, most notably with SUV sales continuing to overtake passenger cars and the growth of dual-cab utes as family transport.

Despite the car market experiencing a 15% drop in sales during 2018, car sales for Utes and SUV’s have increased. The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to Australia’s love for Utes. At the end of 2018, Utes made up 18% of the top-selling cars and experienced a 6.3% increase in sales, according to data released by Car Sales.

In May 2019, total sales (including passenger cars, SUVs, light and heavy commercial vehicles and the national government fleet) were down 8.1% from the same time last year, sitting at 92,561 sales.  According to a Canstar interview with Tony Weber (CEO of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries) ..”the downward trend was attributed to an economic downturn, drought, political events, the tightening of financial lending and lack of confidence in the market”.

So let’s take a look at Australia’s top 10 selling cars in 2019 so far and what people are choosing to spend their money on…

10th: TOYOTA Prado

  • May 2019 Sales: 1,776
  • April 2019 Sales:  1,473
  • April 2018 Position: 9th

The Prado has remained (just) in the top-10 most popular cars of 2019. A tough looking SUV, if you are looking for an off-road seven-seat vehicle, the Prado is definitely best suited to that purpose. Toyota introduced a new full-time tailgate option for its Prado, which relocates the spare wheel and deletes the second fuel tank. However buyers are now able to opt for the alternative, no-cost tailgate design that “is lighter and, therefore, easier to open, especially when the vehicle is parked facing down a hill”, according to Toyota. The optional tailgate also incorporates a glass hatch that opens independently, allowing owners to quickly access the LandCruiser Prado’s cargo area when its full aperture is not required.

Noteworthy features include:

  • Reversing camera
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Front park assist
